Confessions of a Drug Pusher
DO WE IGNORE HEALTH CARE REALITY?
HOW AARP LETS SENIORS DOWN AT OUR PERIL
Commentary by Tom Braun, RPh.
Recently I wrote about the fact that Americans are dying from innocently overdosing on Acetaminophen, because it is in multiple products for colds, for pain and sleeping. The dominant brand is Tylenol who has 67 products on retail shelves in America. The FDA recognizes that 400 people die each year from this cause of total liver destruction, but the FDA only receives reports on about 5 percent of the deaths that transpire, and the real number of deaths is close to 8,000.
In addition, it is now commonly reported that over 50 percent of all liver transplants in this country are due to overdosing on acetaminophen.
Total liver transplants are approaching 6000 a year.
In my opinion, that means that over 10,000 people are suffering through and dying from an avoidable medical condition if they only knew what the facts were. These numbers don't include those that are treated for acetaminophen toxicity in hospitals and recover.
I reported that the FDA plans to revise the labeling on the products for acetaminophen, but the process will take a year, and this will not mean that people will stop dieing or not need a liver transplant. In the mean time, another 10,000 people will be afflicted and most will die.
I am so appalled at the inaction of our Healthcare system to this crisis; I decided to write Public Citizen and AARP about this medical disaster.
I never heard from Ralph Nader, but I did hear from a Communication clerk at AARP that acknowledge the receipt of my letter that I wrote to Mr. Novelli, and the response contained no recognition of the crisis.
What followed was a Survey letter from AARP asking how satisfied I was with the AARP response. What response? I received no indication that they were concerned that over a 1000 of their 38 million members would die in the next 12 months from an avoidable crisis. I guess they do not think they have the duty to warn, any more than the FDA or the AMA or the dominant manufacturer Johnson and Johnson.
In the survey form, they asked why I was dissatisfied with their response.
My answer was that "AARP is not an advocate for their members."
Their publications shout spin and glitz to persuade their members to buy their products.
They also asked to explain why I am "Not very likely" to renew my membership. My answer was "AARP agenda is dictated by AARP revenue goals and not membership goals."
I believe the number one goal of all AARP members is to lead a Healthy Life and enjoy their family and friends well into their retirement years.
I don't believe AARP executives support this view; otherwise they would be on Congressional Hill demanding that immediate action be taken to stop this carnage due to acetaminophen poisoning.
I guess the answer is that the line between reality and fiction has become so blurred, that we forget that real human beings are needlessly suffering in this country.
The daily reports on deaths in the Mideast, the crime programs such as CSI are so dominating, as well as newspaper and TV reports of deaths and killings have made us insensitive, and we take no action to demand a stop to the real carnage that is taking place here and around the world.
I pray that real leadership emerges from our governmental and medical institutions that will join together to stop the carnage in medicine, and the acetaminophen poisonings is just the tip of the iceberg.
Retired but not senile yet!
